This three-day workshop offers an immersive experience in the world of ceramic high-temperatures glazes.
Morten Løbner Espersen is internationally renowned for the extraordinary chromatic quality of his work, the result of continuous and passionate research into ceramic glazes, colours, and surfaces.

What is glaze? This workshop begins with a brief introduction to ceramic glazes, exploring what they are, how they work, and how to avoid ruining a beloved bisque-fired piece with the wrong glaze.
The aim is to learn how to improve and transform glazes, making them richer, more beautiful, and more expressive. If you already have a favourite glaze that you use regularly, this may be the right opportunity to develop it further—making it more radiant, changing its colour, or exploring different degrees of gloss or mattness. Achieving the overall aim of the course will involve quite a bit of testing and weighing.
Starting from two factory-made dry glazes—one matt and one glossy—we will look at how existing glazes can be made more beautiful, brighter, muddier—or simply more interesting—by adding different materials. A series of suggested modifications will provide a practical framework for creating more complex colours and avoiding the plastic-like appearance that colourants can sometimes produce.
The workshop will also focus on developing a rich colour palette with a wide range of nuances. Particular attention will be given to crawling glazes and the distinctive surface effects they generate, as well as to the characteristics of matt and glossy glazes.
Through a combination of demonstrations, practical exercises, and testing, participants will have the opportunity to experiment with different glaze possibilities, compare results, and develop a better understanding of how small changes can create a wide variety of colours and surfaces.
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to take home the glaze samples produced during the experimentation.

The workshop requires no previous experience in ceramic modelling and or glazing. It is open to beginners as well as intermediate and advanced practitioners.

Morten Løbner Espersen was born in 1965 in Aalborg, Denmark, and lives and works in Copenhagen, in the harbourside district of Islands Brygge. He trained at Danmarks Designskole from 1987 to 1992 and completed his studies at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués Duperré in Paris. Since opening his own studio in Copenhagen in 1992, he has built a career that established him as one of the most successful Danish ceramicists of his generation. His practice centers on the archetypal vessel, often cylindrical, used as a neutral form on which he layers rich, complex, and boldly colored glazes, in an approach critics such as Glenn Adamson have described as almost baroque. He has taught at the Kolding School of Design and served as visiting professor in Gothenburg, and is a member of the International Academy of Ceramics in Geneva. His work is held in major museum collections, including the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, the Design Museum Denmark, and Denmark's CLAY Museum of Ceramic Art, and has been shown in solo and group exhibitions worldwide.
