About the artist
Johannes Nagel was born in Jena in 1979. He lives and works in Halle (Germany).
Since 2012, he has been teaching at the University of Art and Design Burg Giebichenstein in Halle. Johannes’s ceramics have the characteristic of being placed between the concept of a work of art and that of a vase in a more functional sense. He does not seek perfection, but he wishes to highlight the process of form development.
A particular technique that he uses, especially to create large-scale pieces, is called sand-cast. The moulds are created by himself, obtaining freehand-carved spaces in which the liquid porcelain flows. In this way he works on the negative form. This practice accentuates the spontaneity of the gestures from which his works are born.
