About the artist

Hans Coper was born in Chemnitz, in Germany, in 1920. He arrived in London in 1939, escaping from Nazism. Here, he had met Lucie Rie: they both realized ceramic artworks, working together in her studio at Albion Mews. In his artistic research he has always looked for the essentiality of the form, experimenting with lines and non-conventional surfaces, exploiting the potential of natural tones. Looking at his artworks and those made by Lucie Rie, you can understand how similar their intentions and ideals about ceramic were. Hans exhibited his ceramics at the Berkeley Galleries and at the Galerie Besson for many years, just like Lucie Rie. He died in 1981.
