About the artist

An artist of undisputed talent, with a prodigious technique, Päivi Rintaniemi works on form and movement, which are the foundations of her artistic expression. Her works, often defined as monumental, are perfectly suited to inhabiting large spaces; they are incredibly detailed, but at the same time delicate and fragile. They display a dual nature, vulnerable while embodying great vigour.Rintaniemi won the over-forty section of the 58th Faenza Prize with the work Avis, 2012, which received the following jury description: “the purity of the work, generated by elemental simplicity and sophisticated technique, is a fine example of the Finnish artist’s depth and maturity. Inspired by the primordial form of the container, Rintaniemi has attained a supremely effective combination of fragility and force, form and formlessness.” Talking about her oeuvre, the artist says, “The starting point for my work is the human being: human life, and the challenges of our existence. The rounded forms of my sculptures initially began as self-portraits, and this is the reason why I call them ‘portraits of change.’”
